EMPTY STATES (United Kingdom)

by Jola Kudela

There are 19 Aertherian holy mountains, scattered across the world but Holdstone Down is the most important. Every year on the 23rd July, hundreds of people climb Holdstone Down bringing new stones to the pile. They believe that by doing so they charge a special battery with spiritual energy to be released when the world will most need it.

Aertherians believe that through their spiritual action they can bring a state of balance back to humanity. It may sound like an old wife’s tale but their intentions are good.

Ophelia (Germany)

by Meike Redeker

Through a monologue spoken backwards, the video deals with discriminatory depictions of women in the past and present. In a river scene, resembling J. E. Millais‘ famous painting of Shakespeare’s dying character Ophelia, the filmmaker appears. She speaks constantly into the camera. Her speech remains abstract until the video plays backwards and elicits the words in their original order, revealing a statement about the complex entanglements of language, image and social roles. On different levels the video moves forwards and backwards in time.

Signal-to-Noise (United States)

by Jerry King Musser

We are bombarded continually with information. Some of it, we want to know. Much of it, we do not. There is a simple beauty in the process of gaining information that we need and want. But, the conflict remains: there is much noise surrounding the process. Information is like drops of liquid gold looking for a receiver. Sometimes it comes to us, and sometimes we share it with others. We are a natural conduit. However, what was once an elegant process has now become a chore to overcome.
